Rotary-OCHRI Skin bank is doing a yeoman service for the solace of needy burn victims of Central India by processing cadaveric skin and providing them as skin grafts for burn patients. This Skin Bank has come as a boon for burn victims of Central India. Rotary Club of Nagpur which was instrumental in donating equipment’s for this skin bank is being developed and maintained by Nagpur based Orange City Hospital & Research Institute on no profit basis. The Cadaveric skin which is processed scientifically in this skin bank is subsequently used a biological burn dressing by all major burns surgeons of Central India. Many delegations from far and wide visit this skin bank to understand its working methodology which is guided by National Burns Center, Mumbai. Although the unit works on no profit no loss basis; basic recurring costs was being charged to incoming patients albeit skin graft was 10 times lower than artificial grafts. Accordingly Rotary Club of Nagpur had approached MOIL authorities and aired their grievances related to skin charges. MOIL is now considering to provide free skin through Rotary OCHRI Skin bank to needy burn patients. MOIL will bear the costs of skin as their CSR activity. As a step towards finalizing this agreement with RCN; Dr.Amit Tiwari, Chief Medical Superintendent- MOIL visited Rotary OCHRI skin bank to understand the functioning of bank and also check quality initiatives taken. Dr.Sameer Jahagirdar, Burns & Plastic Surgeon & Incharge, Rotary OCHRI Skin bank led him through the working methodology and conveyed the quality procedures adopted and followed under guidance of National Burns Center(Mumbai). At the outset, Dr.Usha Nair, Director, Ravi Nair Hospitals Private Limited and Dr.Anup Marar, Director- OCHRI welcomed the visitor and highlighted the various social commitments undertaken by OCHRI. Dr.Amit Tiwari complimented TEAM OCHRI and Rotary Club of Nagpur to have envisaged such a unique social venture which not only reduces mortality and morbidity of burn victims but reduces their physical and mental agony apart from cost reduction in treatment vis-à-vis artificial grafts which are 10 times costlier. |
