Shri. Nair inaugurates Nagpur IMA’s “Old is Gold”

Indian Medical Association – Nagpur branch had recently organised a musical program “Old is Gold” to commemorate 65+ Club which will have events to involve senior doctors above 65 years of age. Dr. Ashish Disawal, President Nagpur IMA had invited Shri.Udaybhaskar Nair, Chairman, Ravi Nair Hospitals Private Limited to launch this novel undertaking. Appreciating the endeavour; Shri. Udaybhaskar Nair stated that population aging—the increase of the share of older individuals in a society due to fertility declines and rising life expectancy is an irreversible global trend with far-reaching economic and socio-political consequences. By 2050, the number of people aged 60 and older will more than double from its current levels, reaching around 2 billion. Population aging will likely lead to declining labour forces, lower fertility, and an increase in the age dependency ratio, the ratio of working-age to old-age individuals. For monetary and non-monetary reasons, work is a pivotal element of one’s well-being. Recognizing this could be an essential part of the solution. Paid work contributes not only to material well-being but also to psychological well-being through social interactions and opportunities for personal and professional growth. And unpaid work, like volunteering, care work and artistic work, can provide these same psychological benefits. Given these positive effects, encouraging and rewarding paid and unpaid work among the elderly could be a pivotal part of the solution to the aging-related fiscal and social challenges. Phased-in retirement, fiscal sustainability, and well-being are crucial for aging population.

He added that as our loved ones get older, retire, they may not have as many opportunities to get out and socialize as they did in their younger years. It will also be harder for them to keep active, and both are very important to their physical and mental health. Isolation is extremely common in the older population, and the end result could be detrimental to our loved one’s mental health and cognitive functioning. By better understanding the risks of social isolation and taking proactive measures to combat it, we can help our elderly family members enjoy their golden years. Hence this step by Nagpur IMA is laudable to keep 65+ doctors occupied and active within their own circle. Prominent among those who were present were Dr.Y.S. Deshpande, President, IMA, Maharashtra and senior Cardiologist of the city Dr.B. Subhedar.
